Briceville man dies in Friday...

Calvin L Daugherty, 60, died Friday.
Daugherty received a head injury during a logging accident in the Vasper Community, according to a report from Campbell County Sheriff's Deputy Travis Bostic. Daughterty was cutting a series of trees off Sharp Lane. These trees were falling slow, according to a witness, Bostic said. One tree fell into a smaller tree, dislodged the tree top, and caused it to spin towards Daugherty. Daugherty was knocked to the ground by the falling tree top.

LaFollette man’s computer seized...

A LaFollette man was arrested on child pornography charges following an investigation by Det. Dan Schneider of the Internet Crimes Against Children taskforce.

Russell chosen as LaFollette...

At Tuesday night’s meeting, the LaFollette City Council chose Billie Russell as the new full-time city administrator.

“This is history,” council member Joe Bolinger said. “As far as I know, there’s never been a woman city administrator before.”

Embattled former high school...

A former Campbell County High School educator who resigned Jan. 28 after allegations of inappropriate conduct was jailed early Sunday morning after police say he was found driving under the influence.
Jason Scott Ivey, 34, 282 Meadowwood Circle, LaFollette, was seen driving on Central Avenue in the dark without his headlights. The officer, Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy James McCall,  allegedly witnessed Ivey attempt a lane change and nearly strike another vehicle.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The LaFollette Press asked its more than 1,800 Facebook fans to identify the worst road conditions in Campbell County. Your responses were overwhelming. From Elkins Road; to Highway 229 in Jellico; to Stinking Creek Road near Interstate 75 exit 144; to parts of Demory Road — dozens complained about potholes, cracks and unsafe conditions along corridors in the county. It’s not just a problem unique to Campbell County. In Tennessee alone, there are 93,251 miles of public roads and 38 percent fail to meet adequate standards, according to a recent report issued by automobile club AAA. Teen clipped by car

 CARYVILLE—A 16-year-old driver was taken to Tennova Medical Center in LaFollette after a train clipped his car.

On April 29, the teen was pulling into the driveway at 1471 Highway 16 in Caryville. The driveway crosses the Norfolk Southern railroad and is marked with stop signs.

According to the report, the teen ran the stop sign and his back bumper was clipped by an oncoming train. The impact caused the teen’s vehicle to spin around and come to rest on the east side of the tracks. 

Woman arrested for allegedly...

An earlier incident at the Jellico Electric and Water System led to a warrant for an arrest last week.
On April 25, Billy Rowe, the utility’s general manager, and Woody Swafford, the water department supervisor, advised Jellico Police Chief Chris Anderson about an incident in which an employee’s wife reportedly came to the building and threatened another employee.

Dog bites deputy

Sheriff’s deputy Ty Daugherty is recovering from an April 26 dog bite after he and Deputy Cody Chapman served a warrant on Dale Wilson, 629 Grantsboro Rd.
Wilson was most recently arrested on April 12 when he was allegedly found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and a schedule II drug believed to be methamphetamine.

Burglary call ends in vandalism...

A LaFollette woman was jailed after she reportedly destroyed the front door of a home at 200 Smith Oak Lane.
The victim told police that Kimberly Nicole Walden, 702 S. 21st Street, LaFollette, came to her home and began kicking the door and swearing at the victim, telling her to come outside, according to the report.
Walden then allegedly began striking the front door of the home with an ax.
Walden was found on Ridenour Lane where she reportedly admitted to causing the damage. She was arrested and taken to the Campbell County Jail.

Statements reveal bank blunders...

 The town of Jellico spent nearly two weeks in the red last summer as finance problems slowly came to a head.

It was May when the town first became overdrawn, according to bank statements obtained by the LaFollette Press. 

The statements are records of only some of the town’s accounts according to Mayor Les Stiers.

“That’s for most of the accounts, not all of them,” he said.
