What is the
Relay for Life?
In communities all across the United States, people are joining together
in a common cause ... to raise funds to support the programs of the
American Cancer Society. The Relay for Life is an all-night activity
that serves as the culmination of fund-raising events by businesses,
community organizations, churches, schools, neighborhood groups and
others.
The Relay itself serves many purposes. For some, it is a time to celebrate
their success in fighting cancer. For others, it is a time to remember
loved ones lost to cancer.
Participating in a Relay for Life actually begins by forming a team
of coworkers, friends families members or any other group. Those teams
then raise money in the months and days leading up to the Relay in
their community.
At the actual Relay, teams are encouraged to have campsites for their
team members, and many campsites often have themes that the teams
use to motivate themselves and to entertain others at the Relay. Teams
are encouraged to have one member walking on the track during the
actual Relay as a symbolic jesture of the continuing fight against
cancer.
Numerous events and activities are offered throughout the night. One
of the most touching events is the nighttime luminaria ceremony. Luminaria
are arranged around the track and lit as all other lights at the track
are dimmed. Each luminaria contains the name of someone battling cancer
or someone who has been lost to cancer.
Please join in this year's Relay for Life in Campbell County. The
actual event is May 13-14, 2005 at the Campbell County High track,
but we encourage you to join now. Please contact Suzanne Hudson at
566-6279, or see other volunteers listed on the "contact info"
page. |
