  • Aiming for turkeys and bragging rights

    Earl Norman tucked a chaw of tobacco in his cheek and slung a handsome 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun over his left shoulder.

    “This gun kills at both ends,” said Norman, explaining the shoulder-bruising recoil of his trusty Remington Model 11-87.

    Norman, who will be 70 years old next June, joined a dozen or so outdoorsman waiting to take their turn on the firing line Saturday afternoon at the turkey shoot hosted by Bill Lowe on his picturesque Elk Valley farm.

    Opening weekend harvests up for bears, deer, turkeys

    The weekend of Sept. 24-25 marked the beginning of bear, deer and turkey seasons for archers only. So far this year, there have been increased harvests for all three species.

  • Warning system installed at Watauga Dam and modified at 11 others, including Norris

    The Tennessee Valley Authority is installing a new safety warning system at Watauga Dam in Carter County and modifying others to improve public safety during water releases from the dams.

  • Pine Mountain Longbeards host archery tournament

    The Pine Mountain Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation held its inaugural Sportsman Archery Tournament on Sept. 17 at the Ball Farm Event Center in LaFollette. The sign-up started at 9 a.m. and continued until 11.  As the contestants signed up, they were directed to the course of 30 different targets, all at different ranges and set-ups.

    The course was designed to give the archer a “real to life” target using 3-D life-like targets, which included deer, antelope, bear, raccoon and turkey.

    The lake level on Friday, Sept. 9 was 1,009.78 feet and rising.

    Heavy rains from the remnants of tropical storm Lee cooled the surface temperature to 80 degrees and swelled the upper rivers with a high inflow.
