    Campbell County High School’s girls have a chance to clinch the District 3-AAA regular season basketball championship this week with pivotal road games at Knox Halls (Tuesday) and Anderson County (Friday).

    The Lady Cougars (12-0 district, 18-5 overall) stayed perfect in league play last week with victories over longtime district powers Oak Ridge and Powell.

  • Cougars make Wildcats work for...

    With unpleasant memories of a 35-point loss earlier this season at Oak Ridge, players on the Campbell County High School varsity boys’ basketball team were bound and determined not to let it happen again.

    The host Cougars (6-6 district, 14-8 overall) took the Wildcats (11-2 district, 19-3 overall) to the wire Friday night before falling, 56-53.

  • Dixie Youth Baseball League...

    After decades of running their own summer baseball leagues, the city of LaFollette and the town of Caryville are combining forces to build a countywide program.

    Prospective coaches got a chance to meet organizers and board members of the newly formed Campbell County Dixie Youth Baseball League during a Sunday afternoon get-together at the CCHS Baseball Field House.

    “I’d like to make our program a countywide program,” CCHS baseball coach Brad Collette said when addressing the coaches in attendance.

  • Eagles, Lady Owls advance to...

    LaFollette Middle’s Bailey Rutherford made the most of her only basket of the game Saturday afternoon during opening round Area 2 Tournament action at Oak Ridge-Jefferson.

    Rutherford made a shot at the buzzer to give the fourth seeded Lady Owls (9-11 overall) a dramatic 26-24 come-from-behind victory over fifth seeded Clinton.

  • Gillenwater leads CCHS freshmen...

    The CCHS freshmen played host to Scott County on Monday night. Campbell County jumped out to an early 19-7 lead on the hot hand of Darin Gillenwater. 

    The sharpshooter, who was coming off a 24-point performance against Hardin Valley, hit five of six shots including three 3-pointers.

  • Co-ed volleyball tourney set for...

    The Jellico High School softball team will hold a co-ed volleyball tournament Feb. 3-4 as a fundraiser.

    The event will be hosted by Jellico High School. Games will begin on Friday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. The entry fee is $30 per team of six players. There must be two females on the court at all times for each team.

  • Cougars sweep Hardin Valley in...

    Campbell County High School’s boys are holding their own in the District 3-AAA basketball race after two big wins over the Hardin Valley Academy.

    The most recent victory came Monday night, when the Cougars (6-4 district, 14-6 overall) beat the Hawks 56-42 at Knoxville.

    Senior forward Nick Litton led the charge with 18 points, followed by Corey Poteet with 13, Trey Torres 10, Ethan Simpson six, Jordan Kindred four, Tyler Chapman three and Tuffy Shoupe two.

  • Lady Cougars remain perfect in...

    A regular season sweep of District 3-AAA girls’ basketball rival Hardin Valley took the sting out of Campbell County’s upset loss last week to Claiborne County.

    The Lady Cougars (10-0 district, 16-5 overall) saw their 12-game winning streak come to an unlikely end Thursday night at Tazewell during a 64-58 defeat by a mediocre Claiborne County team.

    Campbell County didn’t stay down for long, however, as the Lady Cougars bounced back with two impressive league victories over Hardin Valley (6-5 district, 8-10 overall) in the span of three days.

  • Blue Devils top 9th ranked Rams...

    When Jellico coach Mike Reynolds has all his players available, the Blue Devils have the makings of a championship team.

    Such was the case Thursday night, when Jellico hosted Grace Christian Academy, the state’s ninth ranked Class A boys’ high school basketball team.

    The Blue Devils (5-3 district, 11-11 overall) led from start to finish in a game they won 72-69 while avenging a 16-point loss to the Rams six days earlier at Knoxville.

    Jellico also put an end to GCA’s 14-game winning streak.

  • LMS splits varsity games with...

    LaFollette Middle School’s varsity basketball teams split a home meeting Monday night with Clinton.

    The Lady Owls won their game, 26-19. Kasi Phillips led the way with 11 points, followed by Julia Powell with six, Bella Luna four, Ashley Whited three and Kassie Kibler two.

    Kelly Wardell paced Clinton with 10 points.

    LaFollette led 12-8 at halftime.

    Clinton won the boys’ game, 52-28. J’Quan Thomas led the Hawks with 11 points.
