    Taylor McKeel knelt down, wiping the dirt from home plate.

    Knowing it would be his last performance on the Campbell County diamond, he kissed the plate following the Cougars’ 6-1 victory over Central to advance into the District 3-AAA tournament.

    “It was really bittersweet,” fellow senior Bo Farris said of the victory.

    Campbell County struck late, after they struggled with getting base runners home during the first four innings.

  • Race to the Finish

    LaFOLLETTE—It was race day Saturday morning, as dozens of Cub Scouts from Campbell, Claiborne and Scott counties converged at First Independent MIssionary Baptist Church on Beech Street for the Cumberland District's Pinewood Derby racecar competition. Each hoped to take home top honors, but only one scout emerged with the checkered flag and a trophy to testify to their wood whittling skills.

    All the other girls wish they could be like her.

    As Ally Greene crossed the final hurdle, her knee clipped the top, causing her to stumble.

    However, she quickly regained her balance in order to grab the win in the 2013 East Tennessee Middle School Elite Championships on Tuesday night.

    “I hit my knee a couple times, and I thought I wasn’t going to win,” Greene said. “I put out my hand at the end, and I beat her.”

  • Bruce, Wells take Angler of the...

    Nick Wells and Jordan Bruce prevailed through the wind and rain on Saturday to take home the top honors for the Campbell County High School fishing team.

    The pair roped in 13.45 pounds in the weathered tournament in order to retain the Angler of the Year awards.

    “We knew we had it when we caught the big fish,” Wells said. “We’d seen (Caleb Dople and Zach Paul) weigh in five smaller fish, and we were pretty excited just to get the rods and the bragging rights.”

    The Jellico Middle School Baseball game will travel to Cumberland Gap for its final game of the season. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m.

  • Military Ball a success for the...

    Saturday, April 20th, the CCHS JROTC Department held its annual Military Ball at the Pavilion in Cove Lake State Park.

    Cadets, cadre and the JROTC Boosters spent numerous hours planning, coordinating and rehearsing in order to make this event a success. 

    At 8 a.m., cadets and boosters started setting up for the ball at Cove Lake Pavilion.

  • Campbell County JROTC hosts...

    On Saturday, April 13, CCHS hosted its annual Pine Mountain League competition. 

    Four schools from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia participated in five event, which included an academic test, rope bridge, Color Guard, obstacle course and a secret test.

    The events proved to be difficult in physical prowess and mental knowledge.

    The 50-question academic exam was a test of the schools’ knowledge of JROTC.

  • Hunt heals the Hurt

    A whip-poor-will called in the distance, as darkness fell on the Lewis Farm in Stinking Creek.

    Rain continued to drizzle, but the emotions were anything but dreary for the hunting camp on Saturday night.

    Hunters were gathering in, showing off their newly acquired trophies, as congratulations abound among the hunters and guides.

    The Willing Sportsman Event was coming to a close for the Pine Mountain Longbeards.

    A walking stick in one hand and a turkey lying at his feet, Army Master Sgt. Michael Trost was all smiles on Saturday night.

    The drizzling rain that continued to fall didn’t deter Trost, who was welcomed with congratulations and smiles on the Lewis Farm.

    For Trost, it was a chance to take everything off his mind.

    Ronnie Gullion, a retired Sgt. 1st Class, came to the Willing Sportsman Event in hopes of seeing his fellow Wounded Warriors take a bird on the Lewis and Cunningham farms.

    However, little did he know, he would be walking away with a bird himself.
