  • Blue Devils stumble to Lions

    It’s completely understandable if Jellico High School’s Danny Oakes feels a little like University of Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin these days.

    Last week, both coaches led their respective teams to the brink of victory, only to see them fail to score after driving deep inside their opponents’ territory during the final minutes. The final scores were even similar: Jellico Blue Devils fell 19-12 at The King’s Academy, while the UT Vols were upset 19-15 at home by UCLA.

  • Owls use Stone to grind out 42-...

    Chris Stone ran wild Thursday night for the LaFollette Middle School football team. Stone scored five touchdowns during a 42-20 victory over winless Jellico Elementary at Al Rotella Stadium. It was the first win of the season for the Owls, who improved their record to 1-3 overall.

  • Lady Cougar golfers make...

    Campbell County High School golfers Tiffany Roach and Cheyenne Baker qualified for next week’s regionals at Tennessee National with their performances Monday during the District 3-AAA Tournament at Mill Stone.

    Roach took the fourth spot behind the players from the top three teams.

    Baker made a six-foot putt to defeat Hardin Valley’s Liz Dobbins and Elayna Siebert of Karns on the second hole of a sudden death playoff and claim the fifth qualifying berth.

  • Cougars drop region game at Karns

    The Campbell County High School varsity football team lost its second region game this season with a 39-7 setback Friday night at Karns.

    Junior fullback Wesley Cook scored the Cougars’ lone touchdown in the second half.

    Karns led 7-0 at the end of a first-half defensive struggle.

    Campbell County shot itself in the foot by turning the ball over numerous times in the second half. It was the first win this year for Karns (1-1 region, 1-3 overall), while the Cougars dropped to 0-2 in region play and 1-3 overall.

  • Lady Cougars run sixth at...

    In a field as large as the one they faced Saturday, the Lady Cougars have never finished higher.

    With Carlie Childress and Lauren Evans leading the charge, the Campbell County High School girl’s cross-country team took sixth place out of 22 complete and 12 incomplete teams at the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville.

    Childress ran the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes, 45 seconds to finish 22nd overall. Only a couple seconds behind her was Evans, who placed 23rd.

  • Cougars fall 46-13 to AC in...

    Campbell County High School’s varsity football team will have to wait another year for a chance at a victory over Anderson County.

    After a 15-year hiatus, the series resumed Friday night at L. Hope Dossett Stadium, with the visiting Mavericks pulling out a 46-13 victory in the second half.

    The Cougars (0-1 region, 1-2 overall) spotted AC (1-0 region, 1-1 overall) an early 12-0 lead before storming back to take a one-point advantage in the third quarter. The Mavericks scored five touchdowns during the final 23 minutes to put the game out of reach.

  • CCHS golf team ties for third at...

    In a tune-up for the tournament season, the Campbell County High School boy’s golf team tied for third place out of nine teams in the District 3-AAA Shoot-out at Beaver Brook.

    Knox Halls posted the best score with 144. Knoxville Central finished second with 149, while Campbell County, Anderson County and Oak Ridge each shot 154.

    Senior Matthew Chambers led the Cougars with a score of 37, followed by Bryce Roach and Logan Baird 38 each; Spenser St. John and Corey Bray 41 each.

  • Losses mount for middle school...

    With losses across the board last week, Campbell County middle school football teams are quickly falling behind in their respective division races.

    The LaFollette Owls (0-2 overall) suffered a 20-8 defeat Thursday night at Norris. Chris Stone returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown to get the Owls on the scoreboard. Josh Henry ran for the two-point conversion.

    LaFollette will face another winless team this week when the Owls host Jellico (0-3). The Blue Devils fell 38-12 at Fairview last week after committing half a dozen turnovers (4 fumbles, 2 INTs).

  • Squirrel Fest '09

    Tall tales were as plentiful as targets Saturday morning at Squirrel Fest, the annual gathering and encampment of small game hunters on the Chuck Swan Wildlife Management Area.

    Started 20 years ago by a group of hunters from Campbell County, the event has traditionally been held on opening day of squirrel season in late August.

    The last few years, Squirrel Fest has also coincided with Free Hunting Day, which was enacted by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission as a way to introduce young people to hunting.

  • CCHS vs. AC game likely to go...

    Campbell County’s game this week against Anderson County will be the first meeting of the two teams since Sept. 2, 1994, when the Mavericks opened the season with a 39-0 victory on their home field.

    Both teams made the playoffs last season in their respective divisions. Both teams also had to replace several starters, including their quarterbacks. However, this is where their similarities end.
