  • Cougars use jamboree as tune-up...

    Cougar football fans will definitely need a program this season to identify all the new faces on the Campbell County High School roster.

    Fewer than half a dozen starters return from a team that set school scoring and rushing records and made back-to-back appearances in the state playoffs.

    But even though the Cougars are in a rebuilding mode, that doesn’t mean expectations aren’t as high for this year’s team.

    “I think we’ll get better as the season goes on,” said Campbell County coach Dewayne Wells.

  • Jellico puts up fight in jamboree

    A jamboree tune-up against a tough opponent may have been exactly what the Jellico High School football team needed going into tomorrow (Fri.) night’s season opener at arch rival Williamsburg, Ky.

    The Blue Devils lost 21-7 to Cumberland Gap in a very competitive jamboree scrimmage Friday night.

    “We made a lot of mistakes early in the scrimmage, but our effort was great,” said Jellico coach Danny Oakes.

    The Blue Devils scored their touchdown on an 18-yard pass play from junior quarterback Tyler Brummett to senior wideout Michael Douglas.

  • Potter taking his baseball...

    Campbell County High School shortstop Blake Potter announced on Tuesday his decision to continue his baseball career as a student at the University of the Cumberlands.

    Potter, an honorable mention all-district candidate last spring, plans to pursue a degree in engineering.

    He excelled on the field, despite playing for four different head coaches throughout his high school career.

    Potter’s best season was in 2008, when he hit .447 and was named first-team All-District 3-AAA.

  • Jellico Elementary players are...

    You’d never know Jellico Elementary’s football team went winless last season by talking to Marshall Lay.

    When the question arose last week as to which team was best in the Area 2 small-school division, the undersized back with a lion-sized heart was quick to chime in, “We are. There’s no thinking about it.”

    Lay’s confidence mirrors that of his teammates, who are coming off a disappointing 0-8 season.

  • Golf tourney will benefit...

    The Cougar Classic, a four-person best ball golf tournament to benefit the Campbell County High School baseball program, is scheduled for Aug. 19 at the LaFollette Country Club.

    Lunch will be served at noon. Golfers will tee off at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start.

    Registration fee is $225 per team. First place pays cash, second place receives a prize.

    Prizes will be awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin

    There will also be a putting contest for cash and door prizes.

  • Cougars set to unveil 2009...

    With the season opener just over a week away, Campbell County High School’s football team is still a work in progress.

    The Cougars, who lost 18 seniors to graduation last spring, will roll out their 2009 team tomorrow (Fri.) night during the Orthopaedic Surgeons of Oak Ridge Football Jamboree at historic Blankenship Field.

    Campbell County struggled on offense during a scrimmage last week against Oliver Springs. Senior quarterback Trevor Nolan did provide a big highlight for the Cougars when he scored on a long touchdown run.

  • Mission field of dreams

    Wearing shorts, t-shirt, baseball cap and sunglasses, Brian Miracle looks more like a typical college student than a missionary.

    But give him half a chance and the Tennessee Wesleyan outfielder will prove to you that athletes can preach as well as play ball.

    Miracle traveled to Italy, Hungary and the Ukraine this summer as an intern with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Impact International Sports Ministry. The team of 15 college students spent two months overseas, which included several weeks of training in the Italian Alps.

  • JMS to host football jamboree...

    Jacksboro Middle School will host its annual football jamboree tonight (Thurs.) beginning at 6 p.m.

    Jellico will play Norris in the first game, followed by Lake City vs. Jellico at 6:45 p.m.

    A skills competition will take place at halftime.

    The action will pick back up around 8 p.m. with Jacksboro taking on Fulton at 8 p.m.

  • Provins places 5th at USATF meet

    Rusty Provins, an eighth grader at the Christian Academy of Campbell County, took fifth place nationally in discus at the United States Amateur Track Federation Championships last weekend at Greensboro, N.C.

    Provins, who was ranked third going into the finals, bested his previous personal record by eight feet with a throw of 157-1 on a rainy day in Greensboro.

    The winner of the event — a boy from Huntsville, Ala. — set a national meet record.

    Provins also set a new personal record in shot put (42-6 1/2).

  • CCHS senior runner hopes for...

    Carlie Childress has racked up many accomplishments the past three seasons while running cross-country for Campbell County High School.

    Last year, the Lady Cougars’ top runner claimed her second consecutive Cove Lake Invitational girl’s individual title, placed among the top 10 at the Panther Creek Invitational and finished 28th at the regional championships.

    However, the top two goals — qualifying for the state meet and getting a scholarship offer from the University of Tennessee — she has yet to reach.
