  • Campbell County boys pick up...

    Freshman guard Ethan Simpson made a free throw with 1.2 seconds left Monday night to help the Campbell County High School boy’s varsity basketball team pin an 82-81 defeat on host Morristown West.

    The game appeared to be headed to overtime, tied 81-all, when Simpson caught a long inbounds pass from sophomore forward Cody Malicoat and was fouled while attempting a last-second shot. He went to the line and made the second of two foul shots awarded to him

  • Lady Cougars defeat Knox Halls...

    In a game that was closer than expected, the Campbell County High School girl’s varsity basketball team got past district foe Knox Halls, 55-49, Friday night.

    Sophomore point guard Courtney Morris led the Lady Cougars (3-4 district) with 16 points, nine of which she scored during the fourth quarter.

    Jessica Moore chipped in 13 points for Campbell County, followed by Candice Seiber with 12, Kristin Chapman and Amber Young six each, and Maria Foust two.

    Sydney Carden scored all 15 of her team-high 15 points for Halls in the last three quarters.

  • Owls net big victory at Norris

    LaFollette Middle School’s boys picked up a big district basketball win Monday night at Norris.

    The Owls prevailed 39-25 behind the scoring of Austin North, who led with 15 points, and Roston Letner, who had 12. Also scoring for LaFollette was Jeffrey Herrell and Jacob Monday with five points each, and Shaun Phillips with two.

    The Lady Owls suffered a 46-21 setback at Norris. Marie Roach led LaFollette with 10 points, followed by Faith Evans with six, Kendra King and Chelsey Finkenbine two each and Summer Daniels one.

  • JMS sweeps Livesay for homecoming

    Jacksboro Middle School’s basketball teams made a homecoming sweep of visiting H.Y. Livesay last week.

    Hannah Owens and Jamie Mynatt scored 12 points each to lead Jacksboro to a 47-23 triumph. Whitney Sawyers chipped in seven points for Jacksboro, followed by Olivia Brown with six, Michaela Smith and Megan Caudill four each, and Whitney Williamson two. Livesay’s top scorer was K. McCarty with 10 points.

  • LMS basketball teams top Livesay...

    LaFollette Middle School’s varsity basketball teams opened the New Year with a bang Monday night by sweeping Livesay at Harrogate.

    The Lady Owls won by 10 points, 31-21, to improve their record to 7-6 this season.

    Guards Kendra King and Chelsey Finkenbine led LaFollette in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

    Amber Guy, a seventh grade post player, had a great all-around game for the Lady Owls with seven steals, five rebounds, four blocked shots and two points.

  • Lady Eagles improve to 13-0 with...

    Victory was plentiful Tuesday night for Jacksboro Middle School’s varsity basketball teams, which made a varsity sweep of visiting Soldiers Memorial.

    The Lady Eagles stayed unbeaten (13-0) with a 50-10 rout of the SMMS girls. Post player Jamie Mynatt led a balanced attack for

    Jacksboro with 10 points. Whitney Sawyer chipped in nine points — all from downtown — followed by Whitney Williamson with eight, Megan Caudill seven, Olivia Brown six, Michaela Smith five, Krista Williams three, Hannah Owens and Shianna Marlow one each.

  • Middle school baseball tryouts...

    Middle school baseball tryouts will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 16 at Campbell County High School. Boys from both LaFollette and Jacksboro middle schools are invited to participate. The original date was Jan. 9, but tryouts have been delayed a week due to extremely cold weather.

  • Campbell County girls avenge...

    Campbell County High School’s girls avenged an earlier loss to district basketball rival Clinton with a 58-34 triumph on Jan. 5 at Clinton.

    Sophomore wing Kristin Chapman led the Lady Cougars (2-4 district, 8-7 overall) with a career-best 25 points, 11 rebounds and a blocked shot. She connected on 9 of 13 attempts from the field and 6 of 9 charity tosses.

    Jessica Moore, a senior guard who is signed to play for NCAA Division 1 Campbell University next season, complimented Chapman’s effort with 20 points, four assists and a steal.

  • Five Jellico football players...

    Five Jellico High School football players have been named to the All-District 4-A/AA Football Team this year following a vote of the league coaches. They include running back/linebacker Freedom Scott, running back/linebacker Ryan Morris, wide receiver/defensive back Nathan Overton, lineman/quarterback Devin Oakes and receiver Michael Douglas.

  • Memories of 2009: Looking back...

    From team championships to outstanding individual performances, Campbell County athletes had another memorable run in 2009.

    The year began with the CCHS boy’s basketball team advancing to play in the district tournament championship game for the first time since 1996 and ended with a returning player on the same team breaking a school scoring record that had stood for nearly 30 years.

    In-between there was lots and lots of action and drama. The following is a monthly review of the top sports happenings in Campbell County over the past year.
