  • Cougars schedule pre-season...

    Campbell County High School football players donned full battle gear Monday afternoon as they took to the field for the first day of pre-season practice in full pads.

    The Cougars worked out in shorts and helmets all last week, and, before that, participated in summer 7-on-7 passing drills with a handful of local teams.

    Campbell County coach Dewayne Wells has scheduled three scrimmages during the four-week period of fall practice.

  • Jacksboro builds AAU basketball...

    Over the past four years, the Jacksboro Lady Eagles — coached by Randy Brown — have become one of the most successful girl’s AAU basketball programs in East Tennessee.

    The Lady Eagles have posted an overall record of 80-17 while winning 17 area AAU tournaments and finishing second in nine others.

    With 26 AAU tournament championship game appearances, one might be hard-pressed to find a team that can match the success of the Lady Eagles.

  • Caryville 11-12s finish third at...

    After losing to Harriman on July 3, the Caryville Dixie Youth Baseball 11-12 All-Stars advanced to play the winner of the Rockwood/Sweetwater game held Saturday, July 4.

    Sweetwater eliminated the host team Rockwood (6th place finish) and met the Caryville All-Stars on Monday, July 6.

    In the top of the first inning, Isaiah Vibbert doubled but was tagged out at third. Jordan Bruce collected the first of three hits and scored on a double by Tate McGhee to give Caryville a 1-0 lead.

  • Tourney loss to Clinton sends...

    Campbell County High School’s baseball team wrapped up summer league play last week in the district tournament at Oak Ridge.

    The Cougars were eliminated 11-5 by Clinton on Wednesday, July 15, but not before outscoring Lenoir City’s B-team, 15-6, in a marathon game the previous night.

    “Overall, it was a good experience,” Campbell County coach Brad Collette said of the summer league.

    “We would like to have gotten some more games in, but the weather didn’t quite cooperate.

  • Football practice kicks off at...

    Seven-on-seven passing drills have given way to team practices in shorts, cleats and helmets for Campbell County High School football players.

    The Cougars began workouts Monday afternoon in unusually cool temperatures that more closely resembled October than July.

    Campbell County will begin working out in full pads next Monday in preparation for the season and home opener on Aug. 21 against Loudon.

    “We’ve got a new passing package and some new wrinkles,” said Cougars coach Dewayne Wells.

  • Comer awarded 2nd degree Black...

    Ethan Comer was recently awarded his 2nd degree Black Belt in Taekwondo at the Tennessee Academy of Martial Arts in LaFollette by Master Mathew Miller. 

    Master Miller is recognized by the USA Taekwondo Federation and, as such, Comer’s belt is certified.

    Comer, who is eight years old, has been involved with martial arts the past four years.

  • Runners raise $7,700 for students

    Perspiration wasn’t the only thing flowing Saturday morning at Deerfield.

    Money poured in at a record pace — $7,700 total — during the 3rd annual Firecracker 5K to Benefit Campbell County Public Schools.

    Race organizers said the proceeds generated from this year’s race would go toward a scholarship for a deserving high school senior.

  • Greene, Provins qualify for...

    Two local track and field athletes — Tyler Greene and Rusty Provins — have qualified to compete on the national level this summer.

    Greene, a former LaFollette Middle School hurdler, advanced to the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics set for Aug. 3-7 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

    With the top four performers in each event advancing, Greene earned his spot at nationals by finishing second in the 100 meter hurdles and fourth in the 200 hurdles during a Junior Olympics qualifier last weekend at the Hardin Valley Academy.

  • Drills start Monday for LL...

    Tri-City Little League Football coaches will hand out equipment on Friday, July 17 at Linden Park  from 5-7 p.m. and on Saturday, July 18 from 1-4 p.m.

    The first day of practice in pads will be Monday, July 20 from 6-8 p.m. Football players (ages 4-12) and cheerleaders (ages  4-14) may sign up at this time.

    Registration fees are $55 for football players and $85 for cheerleaders.

    Campbell County’s teams include players from Jacksboro, Caryville, LaFollette and Jellico.

  • Hawks clip Cougars in yet...

    Over the years, Campbell County High School’s baseball program has never been competitive enough to develop a rivalry.

    That may have changed, however, after Monday night’s summer league tournament opener at Strang Field in Oak Ridge.

    The Cougars took a 2-0 lead after three innings against Hardin Valley, fell behind 5-2 in the sixth, then had a runner on first base and a potential winning run at the plate in the top of the seventh. The Hawks hung on for a 5-4 victory in yet another hotly contested game between the two District 3-AAA teams.
