  • Burgan wins state golf crown

    LaFollette native Todd Burgan claimed his first individual state championship Saturday.

    He defeated Danny Green in 19 holes to capture the 2009 Tennessee Golf Association Match Play title at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin.

    Burgan, a 1987 graduate of Campbell County High School who played collegiate golf at the University of Tennessee, previously captured the 2000 TGA Four-Ball Championship with fellow LaFollette golfer Jarrett Sharp.

  • Caryville baseball team opens...

    Caryville opened the Dixie Youth Baseball District Tournament on July 3 at Rockwood.

    Prior to the district opener, Caryville coach Jim Lane stressed the importance of avoiding the big inning that had plagued his team over the six previous games.

    Caryville was set to play Harriman in their first game of the double-elimination tournament. Last year, the Caryville All-Stars finished third and came within one win of advancing to state.

  • Basketball camp draws record...

    Judging from attendance at last week’s summer camp, the community has embraced the recent success of Campbell County High School’s basketball teams.

    This year’s camp attracted a record 83 participants, in grade levels K-8, who were eager to take instruction from two coaches that led their teams to the regional tournament last season.

    Attendance this year was nearly double that of the 2008 camp.

    “We’re really pleased with year two of our camp,” said CCHS Boy’s Head Basketball Coach Barry Jones.

  • Sluggish bats bog down Cougars...

    Runs have been a bit hard to come by for the Campbell County High School varsity baseball team.

    As a result, the Cougars’ summer league record dropped to 3-4 Monday night following a doubleheader loss to visiting Lenoir City.

    Campbell County was shut out 9-0 in the first game and suffered a 3-1 setback in the nightcap.

    The Cougars produced only one hit (single by Chris Hutson) and got three runners on base during the first game.

  • Renewal of Campbell County vs....

    As if the looming Campbell County vs. Anderson County high school football series needed any more drama, the hiring of Davey Gillum last week as AC’s new head coach all but guaranteed the matchup will become one of East Tennessee’s hottest rivalries.

    Gillum, who grew up in Jacksboro, helped put AC football on the map during the mid-1990s. He was an all-state selection after leading the Mavericks to the Class 4A state semifinals in 1996.

    As a high school junior, he rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns. He graduated from AC in 1997.

  • Legals split doubleheader with...

    On Friday June 5, the Dave Dunaway Legals took on the Lake City squad in Caryville Dixie Youth League 11-12 year old baseball action at Asbury Park.

    Legals’ head coach Jim Lane selected Ethan Jeffers to start. Previously on May 5, Jeffers threw a no-hitter against Lake City.

    Lake City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a single, two walks, a stolen base, a passed ball and an error. In the bottom half of the first, the Legals evened the score on a walk to Tyler Loveday, a single by Bryson Phillips and a double by Andrew Blake Evans.

  • McGhee leads Eagle Tire to...

    Tate McGhee came out of the bullpen Saturday to pitch Caryville’s Eagle Tire to a 10-9 victory over Lake City’s Rocky Top Realty in 11-12 year old Dixie Youth League Baseball action at Asbury Park.

    McGhee came on in relief of Isaiah Vibbert in the fourth inning. During the fifth inning, McGhee struck out the side while his hitters chipped away at the Rocky Top’s lead.

    Eagle Tire won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kyle Reynolds scored on a wild pitch to Cody Dykes.

    Adam Markley suffered the loss for Rocky Top Realty.

  • JMS to host semi pro football...

    The Knoxville Knights, a semi pro football team with players from the Knoxville area, will play the Frankfort (Ky.) Falcons on Saturday, June 20 at Jacksboro Middle School. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5. Five former Campbell County High School players are on the Knights' roster, including record-setting running back Chris Johnson.

  • Sports Camp Calendar

    The 2nd annual Cougar Football Camp is scheduled for June 15-18 at the Campbell County High School practice field.

    Camp hours will be 6-8 p.m. each evening. The camp is for youth who will be in grades 3-8 during the upcoming school year.

    The fee is $40 for anyone who pre-registers or $50 if registering on the opening day of camp.

    Camp instruction will consist of fundamentals for all positions, offensive and defensive.

    Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt.

  • Summer camps keep Lady Cougars...

    This summer has been no picnic for members of the Campbell County High School girl’s basketball program.

    While their friends have been relaxing by the poolside, the Lady Cougars have parked themselves at courtside, waiting for their chance to get in on the action at team camp.

    When all is said and done, Campbell County, which went 14-15 last season, will have faced two defending state champions and another team that played in the state tournament last season.

    “We’re putting them to the test,” said Lady Cougars’ coach Ryan Browning.
