  • Cougars sweep Scott County

    Campbell County High School’s varsity baseball team salvaged a rough week with a series sweep of Scott County.

    The Cougars crushed the Highlanders, 14-1, Monday afternoon to improve their record to 6-23 overall with one regular season game left to play.

    The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run slaughter rule.

    Sophomore lefthander Andrew Dykes went the distance to earn the victory. He struck out eight batters along the way and limited the Highlanders to just two hits.

  • Track athletes hope to qualify...

    Half a dozen Campbell County High School track and field athletes will toss their hat in the ring tomorrow (Thurs.) during the Section 1-AAA Championships in Oak Ridge for a chance to compete at the state level week after next.

    Campbell County is sending two pairs of siblings to sectionals: brothers Justin and Preston Young, and sisters Lindsay and Lauren Evans.

  • Jellico shuts out Cosby in...

    Their first league loss in 10 years has put the Jellico Lady Blue Devil softball team in the unfamiliar role of district runner-up and underdog going into this week’s tournament at Hancock County.

    However, a 13-0 shutout of league foe Cosby High School last Wednesday served notice that Jellico (5-1 district, 13-8 overall) is still a force to be reckoned with on the softball diamond.

    Noel Tiller struck out nine Cosby batters to earn the decision.

  • LMS golfers finish at top of...

    LaFollette Middle School golf teams posted a one-two finish this year at the district tournament.

    The Owls defeated Clinton by 11 strokes to capture a first place trophy in the boy’s competition.

    LaFollette shot 351 as a team. Trevor Huckaby led the Owls with an 86, which was good for fifth place overall. Gunner St. John shot 89, while Caleb Bair and Tyler Chumley each turned in an 88.

    Clinton, with a cumulative score of 362, was led by district medalist Josh Gambrell, who shot a tournament low 74.

  • Laverdiere leads Scots back to...

    Jared Laverdiere is Braveheart without the bravado.

    The softspoken 5-foot-10 junior from Jacksboro has made the Maryville College Fighting Scots a fixture on the national basketball stage with his fearless, yet selfless leadership the past three seasons.

    Maryville just returned from a third consecutive trip to the national tournament without bringing home the top prize.

    However, there are high hopes for 2010.

  • Cougars drop 3-2 heartbreaker to...

    Campbell County came close to getting its first baseball victory Friday against visiting Cumberland Gap.

    However, the Panthers held on to defeat the winless Cougars, 3-2, in seven innings at Brown-Archer Field.

    With Cumberland Gap trailing 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Zack Baughcum drove in a run with a double and later scored on an error to push the Panthers over the top, 2-1. Jaden Guy capped the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning.

  • Cougars lose scoring battle to...

    Campbell County High School’s varsity baseball team had another run of bad luck Tuesday afternoon during a rematch against visiting district foe Karns.

    The Cougars (0-8 overall) went toe-to-toe with the Beavers early on but gave up seven runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings of an 11-6 loss.

    Again, errors played a big part in Campbell County’s defeat. The Cougars made five miscues.

  • Lady Cougars snap tennis skid

    Victories have been in short supply the past few years for the Campbell County High School girl’s tennis team.

    So when the Lady Cougars swept District 3-AAA newcomer Hardin Valley 9-0 Monday afternoon at Cove Lake State Park, there was added cause for celebration.

    “This is not going to do a lot for us in the district (seeding), but it’s going to boost our confidence through the roof,” said Campbell County coach Jason Ivey.

    The Lady Cougars last won a match in March 2005, when they blanked Clinton 8-0 in their district opener.

  • Young takes decathlon title at Y...

    Despite losing the Class AAA state champion to graduation, Campbell County High School will be strong again this year in decathlon.

    Justin Young, who competed in the shadow of Corey Carrington the past three years, won the Y-12 Invitational Decathlon Saturday at the Hardin Valley Academy.

    Teammates Lucas Nelson and Austin McMahan placed fifth and ninth respectively, in the contest that measures athletic prowess in 10 different events.

  • Rain, Tigers dampen CCHS...

    Rain put an early end to Campbell County’s spring break baseball tour of Sevier County ballparks last week.

    The Cougars got in one game — an 11-1 loss Thursday afternoon at Pigeon Forge — before bad weather set in. The game was tied 1-1 going to the bottom of the third inning, where the Tigers took the lead for good.

    Brandon Wilson belted a solo home run as Pigeon Forge scored 10 unanswered runs over the last four innings.
