  • Cougars, Lady Cougars readying...

    The Campbell County Lady Cougars are coming off their first district title since 1991.

    However, they lost a lot from last year’s District 3-AAA powerhouse coming into the 2012-13 season.

    Losing all five starters and their sixth post off the bench, a lot of depth has graduated. Averaging 55 points last season, the Lady Cougars are only returning 8.4 points per game to this season’s squad.

  • Eagles taking to hardwood

    Jacksboro is jumping straight into the fire in the beginning of their 2012 season.

    On Nov. 8, the Eagles face a tough Clinton team, followed by an even tougher Powell team on Nov. 9. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. for Thursday’s match-up with Powell.

  • Country club introduces new pro

    The LaFollette Country Club has a new pro in the pro shop.

    Richard Comer took over the position in late September, which is a move he couldn’t be happier about.

    “It’s a dream come true,” Comer said. “It’s a dream job. I worked up here for five years before mowing and in the pro shop. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. My dad did it years ago, and then my Uncle Bobby (Heatherly) did it. It’s kind of like following in their footsteps.”

    Previous meeting: In their last meeting during the regular season, Oneida took the victory in the battle of the unbeatens. The Indians dealt Jacksboro its first and only loss of the 2012 year, defeating the Eagles 34-6 in Oneida.

  • Payne Medicine

    Ryan Payne did everything but sell tickets at the front gate Friday night.

    The speedy senior for the Blue Devils became the cure for Jellico’s losing pains, going for five touchdowns and 302 all-purpose yards against the Oakdale Eagles.

    The performance snapped the Blue Devil’s 19-game school record losing streak with a 42-6 victory in Oakdale.

    “It’s been a long time coming,” head coach Brad Lawson said after his ice bath.

  • LaFollette, Jacksboro to meet...

    One of LaFollette’s maxims may be to play for 32 minutes, but they only needed eight last Thursday night.

    Five first quarter fumbles led to five Owl scores in the first round of the middle school playoffs at LaFollette Middle School. By the end of the first quarter, the Owls led 38-0, before defeating the Bulldogs of Soldier’s Memorial 38-16.

  • Doin' what hasn't been...

    If the ink pen isn’t out of ink, it has to be close after Friday night's editing of the Cougars' record book.

    Campbell County football records were altered 10 times during the Cougars game with the Halls Red Devils, as Campbell County found the victory, 55-20.

    That score ranks high, as the 55 points is the most scored by any Campbell County team. The most before that point came last season as the Cougars defeated Halls 49-35.

  • Cross-country teams compete well...

    For the past eight years, the middle school and elementary school cross-country teams have had someone in the state race.

    With a much more competitive field this season, they didn’t disappoint again as 16 total runners ran in the middle school and elementary school races on Saturday.

  • Cougar cross-country competes

    The Campbell County cross-country teams competed in the Cove Lake Invitational last Thursday. The top two girls in the county were Michaela Thomas who finished sixth place. Jellico's Olivia Veach finished an impressive 11th out of the 63 competitors in the race. Also participating was Venessia Troxell of Jellico and Chelsey Kennedy of Campbell County. The Cougars' Ben Vinsant hit a personal record for the season, finishing with a 19:33. That time was good enought for 18th. Ryan Middleton also turned in a personal best on the course.
