  • Little consolation for Lady...

    Playing Clinton on its home court Tuesday night proved to be too much of a disadvantage for the Campbell County High School girl’s basketball team to overcome.

    The Lady Cougars fell 64-56 to the Lady Dragons in the consolation game of the District 3-AAA Tournament.

    Both teams will hit the road tomorrow (Fri.) night for opening round elimination games in the Region 2-AAA Tournament. The Lady Cougars will play at Bearden at 7 p.m.

  • Norman leads charge in Cougars...

    In-between free throws Friday night, Zach Norman looked more like the U.S. Marine he plans to become rather than the high school basketball star he is right now.

    Barking out last-minute orders, the 6-foot-4 senior forward directed his teammates to their proper positions during the fourth quarter of Campbell County’s first-round District 3-AAA Tournament game against fourth-seeded Knoxville West.

  • Lady Blue Devils finish fourth...

    Jellico High School’s girls will travel to Hampton tomorrow (Fri.) night for a first-round regional basketball game after finishing fourth in the District 2-A Tournament.

    The Lady Blue Devils (6-23 overall) fell 60-39 Monday night to Washburn in the district girl’s consolation game at Rutledge.

    “Our girls did a lot more this year than people thought they would,” said Lady Blue Devils’ coach Harold Sanders.

  • Blue Devils march into 2-A finals

    Jellico’s boys marched into the District 2-A Tournament championship game with an 83-60 rout of Washburn during Saturday’s semifinal round at Rutledge.

    Ben Mitchell led all scorers with 26 points, including six 3-pointers.

    Jesse Chambers was right behind Mitchell with 24 points, 11 of which he scored during a first-quarter blitz.

    Thomas Ridenour also hit double figures with 15 of his 17 points for the Blue Devils coming in the second half.

  • Cougars fall to Farragut in...

    A spectacular late-season run by the Campbell County High School boy’s basketball team ended last week with consecutive losses in the district and regional basketball tournaments.

    The Cougars were eliminated from the Region 2-AAA Tournament Saturday night after a 59-49 opening round loss to Farragut, the place team from District 4.

    Campbell County got to host the game by virtue of finishing second in District 3.

    Junior forward Sean Ward turned in a solid effort with 13 points and eight rebounds but was the only member of his team to score in double figures.

  • Jellico girls stumble in Region...

    Basketball season ended for the Jellico High School girl’s team Friday night with a 66-32 loss at Hampton in the first round of the Region 1-A Tournament.

    Kayla Bolton tallied a game-high 11 points for the Lady Blue Devils (6-24 overall) but couldn’t overcome the Lady Bulldogs’ platoon of scorers.

    Campbell County High School’s lone senior basketball player fought and scratched for half a dozen points Friday night against a towering Bearden front line.

    The effort was there, but the outcome was not what the Lady Cougars had hoped for.

  • Offense fails Campbell County in...

    Coming into last week’s District 3-AAA boy’s championship game, few East Tennessee high school basketball teams had more momentum than Campbell County.

    The Cougars had won 10 of their previous 12 games, including a pair of blowouts of regular season champ and top-seeded Knoxville Central.

    Oak Ridge, which swept Campbell County during the regular season, slipped into Wednesday night’s title game after barely surviving two earlier tournament games against Clinton and Powell.

  • Error-prone Cougars drop...

    About the only good thing to come out of Campbell County’s season and district opener Monday at Clinton is that the Cougars do have the talent and potential to play much better.

    Campbell County committed five errors and managed just four hits during a 10-0 loss to the Dragons. Second baseman Trammell Marlow and shortstop Blake Potter got a double apiece while first baseman Andrew Dykes and third baseman Joe Goins each had a single.

    The Cougars left eight men stranded on base, half of them in scoring position.
