  • LMS boys rally for 50-24 win...

    LaFollette Middle split a varsity basketball doubleheader Thursday night with visiting conference rival Norris.

    The Lady Owls dropped a 39-17 decision. Kristen Cupples led all scorers with 15 points for the Lady Senators, while Savanna Cummings chipped in 12.

    Chelsey Finkenbine and Marie Roach carried LaFollette with seven and five points, respectively. Faith Evans added three points and Amber Guy two for the Lady Owls.

    There was consolation for LaFollette’s girls, as the jayvee girls defeated Norris, 17-13.

  • County middle school girl's...

    Middle school basketball action is in full swing this week with home games at both LaFollette and Jacksboro.

    LaFollette hosted Horace Maynard for homecoming Monday night and took a varsity split from the Red Devils. The Lady Owls (3-0 overall) won 34-19 after overcoming a slow start. Horace Maynard opened the game with a 5-4 lead, but LaFollette came back to take the upper hand and then some. The Lady Owls led 14-7 at halftime.

  • Cougars drop season finale to...

    It was a disappointing way to end the season for the senior members of Campbell County High School’s football team.

    However, the Cougars’ underclassmen may view Friday’s 33-3 loss to District 3-AAA runner-up Oak Ridge as the catalyst for a breakout season in 2010.

  • Cross-country runners finish...

    High school cross-country runners from Campbell County made their presence felt Thursday during the Region 2 Championships at Victor Ashe Park in northwest Knoxville.

    For the first time ever, Jellico had a runner qualify for the state meet. Jasper Budd, a junior, finished just over three seconds behind Cory Self of Gatlinburg-Pittman in the Class A boy’s race. Budd, who set a new personal record (18:36.40), will try for a similar finish Saturday at the state championships in Nashville.

  • Alumni tournament set to tip off...

    Campbell County High School will celebrate a rich and glorious past on the hardwood with the inaugural Cougar Basketball Alumni Weekend tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday night at John R.W. Brown Gymnasium.

    The list of activities includes an alumni basketball tournament for former players. Players who register will be assigned to one of four teams based on the era they played: 1975-1990, 1991-99, 2000-04, 2005-09.

  • Jacksboro and LaFollette split...

    Jacksboro and LaFollette split a varsity basketball doubleheader Thursday night at Agee Gymnasium.

    The host Lady Eagles won their second game in as many outings, 35-29. Point guard Whitney Williamson paced Jacksboro with 15 points — 11 of which she scored during a second quarter blitz — and a pair of three-pointers.

    Post players Hannah Owens and Jamie Mynatt chipped in seven points each for the Lady Eagles, followed by Whitney Sawyer with four, Krista Williams and Michaela Smith one each.

  • LaFollette Elementary teams stay...

    LaFollette Elementary School’s basketball teams kept their records perfect Tuesday night with a home sweep of county rival Elk Valley.

    The Lady Owls (7-0 overall) put three scorers in double figures: Skylar Boshears with 11 points, Julia Powell and Carmin Harris with 10 each. LaFollette won the game, 43-24.

    Kasi Phillips chipped in six points for LaFollette, while Jessica Monday, Bella Luna and Amber Finkenbine had two each.

    Amber Moore led the Lady Elks with 11 points, followed by Carla Beams with eight, Megan Minton and Janice Brewer two each.

  • CCHS Basketball Alumni...

    A Campbell County High School Basketball Alumni Weekend is being planned for Nov. 13-14 at John R.W. Brown Gymnasium.

    The list of activities includes an alumni basketball tournament for former players. Players who register will be assigned to one of four teams based on the era they played: 1975-1990, 1991-99, 2000-04, 2005-09.

    The tournament will begin on Friday, Nov. 13 and conclude with championship and consolation games on Saturday, Nov. 14. There will also be a slam dunk contest for former players as well as a 3-point shootout.

  • Blue Devils back in win column

    Nearly two months have passed since Jellico High School last won a football game.

    The leaves were still green and the late summer air was hot and humid when the Blue Devils went on the road to defeat North Greene, 14-8, on Aug. 28.

    During the seven weeks that followed, Jellico lost six consecutive games by an average margin of 19. 5 points. The defense gave up a total of 177 points in those six games while the offense struggled to score 60.

  • Jellico’s remarkable...

    Jellico High School’s first appearance in sub-state volleyball was a bit of a disappointment for the Lady Blue Devils.

    Host North Greene defeated Jellico in three games — 25-13, 25-12 and 25-22 — to advance to the state tournament this week at Murfreesboro.

    However, the Lady Blue Devils expect to be back next year with one of their two all-region players returning for her senior season.

    “I just wanted to win one (sub-state game) at least,” said Jellico coach Barbara Carter.
