  • Turkey Bowl bound

    Rocky Top was a rough place to be this weekend, especially for the Lake City Mavericks 8U team.

    Playing in the Battle in Rocky Top, the Mavericks could only manage 6 total yards against a tough Central Kentucky team, as they fell 26-0 in the consolation game.

    On the first night of the tournament, Lake City fell 30-0 to the Decatur Central Hawks.

  • Late turnovers prove costly

    Devin Schmidt is a name no Cougar wants to hear for a while.

    The 6-foot-4 senior forward came to John R.W. Brown Gymnasium and stole a game that was sure to be Campbell County’s, as he scored seven of his game-high 28 points in the final minute.

    With 55 seconds remaining in the game, the Cougars held a 53-47 advantage.

    Schmidt used an offensive rebound for an old-fashioned three-point play with 45 seconds remaining to cut the lead to three, 53-50.

  • Lady Cougars looking for hard...

    The defending District 3-AAA champions aren’t starting their season out the way they wanted to.

    Following a 66-33 loss to Lenoir City last Tuesday, the Lady Cougars fell to the Sevier County Smoky Bearettes by a score of 52-36 on Friday evening.

    During the Sevier County game, Campbell County couldn’t get to the free throw line, as the Smoky Bearettes had a 31 to seven attempt difference.

  • Collumn: Tennessee facing tough...

    Athletic director, Dave Hart said it best.

    "I think this is a tough profession,” he said in Sunday’s press conference. “I think the passion of our fans is one of our greatest assets and sometimes that can be displayed in a variety of ways. We are blessed with a passionate fan base.”

    However, that passionate fan base puts Tennessee in a precarious position at the moment.

  • Campbell County football players...

         Eight Campbell County players were named to the 2012 All-District list for their efforts in the 2012 football season.
    Brandon Long, Bo Farris, Trey Torres, Nick Bailey, Andrew Evans, Jordan Kindred and Corey Phillips were all honored by District 3-AAA.
         Sophomore Ethan Jeffers, however, took top honors as he was named Newcomer of the Year. Jeffers broke nearly every passing record at Campbell County High School in his first season.

    Jacksboro Middle School Basketball

    The Jacksboro basketball teams will take on Oneida at Jacksboro Middle School on Monday, Nov. 26. It is the only game for the Eagles this week. Tipoff for the junior varsity boys will be at 5 p.m., as both varsity squads will follow.

  • Nothing but a technicality

    With the absence of two starters, Austin Hunley and Brian Hicks, the Jellico Blue Devils were looking for a way to win.

    However, a late tangle up under the basket proved costly as the referee signaled a personal foul, followed by a technical foul against the Blue Devils.

    Jellico had battled back from a 32-22 deficit at the half to take the lead over Scott County, 55-54, following back-to-back treys by Billy Rowe and Danny Lay with 1:15 left in the game.

  • Buzzer beater blitzes district...

    As the buzzer sounded Monday evening, Jared Ray’s left-handed layup hit the bottom of the net inside Jim and Linda Agee Gymnasium.

    That score pushed Jacksboro to upset the district favorite in Jefferson, 37-36.

  • Block party not enough for Lady...

    Rachel Ayers had a party under the goal Tuesday night for the Lady Blue Devils.

    The tall post player added a game high seven blocks to hold off the Lady Highlanders. Destany Creekmore and Natasha Taylor joined in the fun, as they each added two blocks of their own.

    However, the 11 total blocks weren’t enough to hold off a late Scott Count surge, as they Lady Highlanders took the game, 47-45.

  • Local kids facing tough...

    When people think of football on Thanksgiving day, it usually involves teams such as the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans, or Atlanta Falcons.

    However, this year, the festivities will feature the Campbell County Cougars and the Lake City Mavs.

    Local football players are looking to play with the big time in this years Battle in Rocky Top this coming weekend. Next week, beginning on Thanksgiving day, they will compete in the Gatlinburg Thanksgiving Bowl.
