    They Campbell County Youth Basketball Association is taking applications for after school basketball. Applications can be picked up at the LaFollette Community Center. Applications for and adult league will also be taken. The season starts Feb. 1.

    This week got infinitely better for the Christian Academy Purple Warriors.

    With an uncertain future of a coach or team just before the season began, the team went on an 0-8 skid throughout the season.

    Assistant head coach Mike Smith watched his church burn on Sunday, as him and his son took over the coaching duties on Monday.

    However, everything got better as the Purple Warriors defeated Elk Valley 34-26 in the first round of the county tournament.

  • Taking charge of District 4-A

    The Jellico Blue Devils took four charges, while having four players score in double figures as they rolled to yet another District 4-A victory Tuesday night.

    Matt Bolton took three charges, as Austin Hunley, Justin Bowlin, and Drew Bruce each drew one, as Jellico rolled to a 59-50 victory.

    “I try my best, even if it is to put my body on the line,” Bolton said. “It’s to give us that extra possession, put more points on the board and try to help my team out.”

  • Jefferson too much for JMS squads

    The trip to Jefferson Middle School wasn’t the best trip for Jacksboro this season.

    The Lady Eagles took on their district rival, but turnovers hindered the Jacksboro squad, as they fell 43-28.

    “That’s the problem we’ve been having all season,” Jacksboro assistant coach Johnny Morris said. “We’ve been having a lot of turnovers, and we’re getting in a hurry with the ball.”

  • Turnovers thump Lady Blue Devils

    Jellico turned the ball over 31 times against Oliver Springs on Tuesday night.

    The Lady Bobcats would turn those takeaways into 39 points, as they took the District 4-A win, 67-24.

    “You can’t do that,” head coach Nancy Douglas said. “You can’t handle the ball like that. You’ve got to see the whole floor. I’m not going to make any excuses for it. We’ve just got to work harder on changing things.”

  • Elite Martial Arts training true...

    Located inside the old Woodson’s Mall, Elite Martial Arts is training true fighters.

    John Long and Ed McDonald work together in teaching different sports such as sports jujitsu, sports grappling and kickboxing.

    “Martial Arts is not difficult,” Long, the head instructor said. “That doesn’t mean it’s easy. The moves are not difficult, but getting good at the moves is the most difficult part.”

  • Column: 'Praise and blame,...

    I’ll have to be honest. When I first heard that Butch Jones was hired for the University of Tennessee job, I wasn’t the happiest.

    I mean, he did get beat by Derek Dooley, 45-23.

    However, after looking up more about Jones and hearing him speak at his press conference last Friday, it seems like he’s going to become the perfect fit for the University of Tennessee.

    After all, it is his dream job.

  • Bad to the Bone

    With 2:48 left in the third quarter, the Clinton student section had already done their game-winning chant as the Dragons led by nine.

    However, as “Bad to the Bone” played with 20 seconds left, the electricity in the air changed as Campbell County trailed by only one, 43-42.

    That’s when Gunner St. John proved just how bad to the bone he really was.

    Fellow senior, Clay Gaylor, hit St. John in the post for a half hook shot that found nothing but the bottom of the net.

  • Post play pushes Lady Cougars...

    Following the Sevier County game, Lady Cougar head coach Ryan Browning said his team needed to dominate the paint in order to win ball games.

    Against District 3-AAA foe, Clinton, that’s exactly what they did in order to come out with a 50-31 victory over the Lady Dragons.

    “That was something big,” Browning said. “I though we had a chance to get it in there. Their post is a little bit slow of foot at times when she rotated. I thought we did a good job.”

  • Cougar 7U finishes third place

    Close games were all around for the Campbell County 7U team in the 2012 Gatlinburg Thanksgiving Classic.

    After falling by a combined 12 points in their two games during the Battle in Rocky Top, things only got closer in Gatlinburg.

    On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, the Cougars fell 20-19 to the Glen Este Trojans of Ohio. Friday, they lost in a 0-0 overtime game, as the Amelia Barons gained more yardage during the overtime period.
