The Jellico High School boy’s varsity basketball team held its own last week while competing against much larger schools in the Grizzly Classic at Grainger County.
Blue Devil forwards Cody Malicoat and Michael Smith scored 15 points each during a 62-61 loss to eventual tournament champion Seymour on Nov. 23. Brent Ayers chipped in 13 points for Jellico, followed by Lee England and Dustin Smiddy with 5 each, Ethan Shelley 4, Tyler Bolton 3 and Chris Lay 1.
The Blue Devils led much of the first half during a 72-49 loss to tournament runner-up Jefferson County on Friday.
Malicoat had 13 points against Jeff County, followed by Ayers with 11, Smith 9, Smiddy 8, England and Jared Potter 3 each, and Bolton 2. The game was tied 8 times in the first half and each team held a 4-point lead. By halftime, Jellico had run out of steam and Jeff County had taken the lead for good, 30-25.
Even though they trailed for the remainder of the game, the Blue Devils stayed within striking distance until the 3:30 mark of the third quarter, when Jeff County went up by double digits, 39-29.
Elliott Satterfield led Jeff County with 18 points, followed by Nick Oliver with 12, Dusty Nickles 11 and Travis Vest 10.
Jellico beat host Grainger County, 71-53, on Saturday to conclude the tournament with a 1-2 record and 3-4 overall.
Malicoat had a big game with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Smith contributed 10 points, followed by Lay with 9; England, Smiddy and Shelley 7 each; and Ayers 4. Malicoat and Ayers were named to the all-tournament team afterward.
“We played a lot better against Grainger County than we did in the second half against Jeff County,” said Jellico coach Mike Reynolds.
“We’ve played seven games in eight days, but there’s no reason we shouldn’t be 5-2 right now. We lost by 2 points to Scott County and by 1 point to Seymour.”
Gulley leads Jellico girls
Senior post player Ashley Gulley led Jellico’s girls with 15 points during a 74-27 loss to unbeaten Jeff County (5-0) at the Grizzly Classic. Rachael Ayers and Ashley Ouimette scored 8 and 4 points, respectively for the Lady Blue Devils.
Morgan Smith and Azlinn Alder paced Jeff County with 20 and 10 points, respectively.
