The Campbell County Lady Cougars volleyball team continued its winning ways in district play with a five-set win over Halls on Tuesday night at home.

“I thought it was crazy, but I thought we played really good defense,” Lady Cougar junior Jacolby Lane said. “And our offense was really good, too, and we talked a lot.”

The two teams split the first two sets. A Destiny Wormsley tip clinched set three, 25-23, for the Lady Cougars, but Campbell County would drop set four, 24-26.

Campbell County took set five, 15-11, after a Lexy Richardson attack for the win.

“Kind of, I was at a place tonight, win or lose, I felt like both teams showed up to play volleyball tonight,” CCHS head coach Renee Wormsley said. “It was a fun match, felt like the crowd was really involved, and I think probably some people that didn’t know how much fun volleyball could be, they figured that out tonight.”

With the win, the Lady Cougars improved to 8-7 overall in varsity games played this year. Campbell County is 5-3 in District 4-AAA.

“We started a word with Macey and Marae’s group, ‘respect,’ and I told them. I said, ‘If you don’t win tonight, it’ll be a fluke for you guys. If you win tonight, you’ll get that respect.’ So I feel like that’s kind of where they’re at,” Renee Wormsley said. “But I do want to say that tonight Macy Monday did an excellent job on the net for us, excellent. She’s been having some trouble staying in the net, and tonight, she did her job very well. So I was super proud of her, and I felt like Lexy Richardson had a very good offensive game, especially the first set.”

A Destiny Wormsley ace made it 2-0 Campbell County early in the fifth set. Anna Cain had a kill to make it 4-1 and an ace to make it 10-5. A Richardson kill had the Lady Cougars up 12-7.

“We’re self-inflicting right now, which is on us,” Renee Wormsley said. “I think I did stats the other night, and we were 15 mistakes on us. So I set a goal of only eight, so every set, I’m trying to drop that, so that we stop making so many on us this year. Because if we can pass the ball, we can set it; we can play offense. But right now, I’m struggling on our defense, which I felt like tonight, we did a really good job at it.”
