LaFollette Police officers ushered in the new month with a rash of driving under the influence arrests.

Just before midnight last Thursday Officer Josh Vann observed a vehicle traveling east on Jackboro Pike with no headlights.

The car’s driver, Michael Lewis, 53, of 505 West Chestnut Street, was allegedly swerving from the fast lane to the slow lane and then almost into a ditch, according to Vann’s report.

As Vann approached Lewis’ vehicle during the traffic stop he reported smelling the strong odor of alcohol and noted Lewis’ slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

Vann administered a series of field sobriety tests all of which Lewis performed poorly, the report stated.

Lewis was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain proper control of a vehicle and violation of the light law. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 15.

In the early morning hours of May 1 Officers Bill Owens and Odell Bailey also encountered impaired drivers.

Owens had been advised to be on the look out for a red Dodge Shadow being operated by a possible intoxicated driver.

After observing the driver, James Alan Slover, 30, of 906 Knoxville Hollow Road, swerving across all traffic lanes several times, Owens executed a traffic stop.

Owens was allegedly met with the strong odor of alcohol as he approached the vehicle, he said.

Slover was unable to perform a battery of field sobriety tests to satisfaction, according to Owen’s report.

He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Just minutes later Bailey made another traffic stop involving and alleged drunk driver.

Rachel A. Kitts, 19, of 190 Eagle Bluff Road, Jacksboro, was allegedly observed driving out of her lane on Jackboro Pike.

Bailey reported that Kitts appeared to be very unsteady on her feet and was unable to perform field sobriety tests to satisfaction, records indicate.

Kitts was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and underage consumption. She is also scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
