The Campbell County High School baseball team picked up its first win of the season: an 8-2 victory over Fulton at home on Friday night.
“It’s always good to get in the win column, and it was against a good team,” Campbell County first-year head coach Eric Hart said. “Fulton’s a good team, so it was a good win for us — and we did everything we were supposed to.”
It was also the first win of Hart’s tenure at Campbell County.
“It’s always fun to be on the winning side of things,” Hart said. “It was good to see an overall well-performed game because we pitched it well. We hit it well, and we played good defense — and that’s what I’ve been trying to tell the guys, that if you put it all together, good things happen, and today, we were able to bounce back and do everything well that we needed to.”
A big part of that win was the pitching.
“Jake Lawson did a fantastic job on the mound, went five innings, had a couple of runs, but he did what he was supposed to,” Hart said. “Offensively, one through nine did a fantastic job of doing what we’re supposed to.”
Jake Lawson, who tossed four scoreless innings to begin, ended up with five innings pitched, giving up two runs on five hits.
“Everybody really played good,” Lawson said. “It was all a team effort.”
Lawson said he relied mostly on his fastball.
“I was throwing a fastball and a change-up and a curveball,” Lawson said.
Ryder Bumgardner came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings to seal the win for Campbell County.
“I think we all played pretty good,” Cooper McQuitty said. “I think it was a well-rounded team win.”
The Cougars got out to an 8-0 lead through two runs in the first inning, five more in the third and another in the fourth.
Fulton scored its only two runs in the top of the fifth.
Peyton Douglas went 3-for-3 for the Cougars with a walk, Hart said.
“I think he was 3-for-3 and was on base four times with a walk and then scored a couple of runs,” Hart said. “So changed the lineup up a little bit and he was sort of in the middle of the lineup — and it worked out today, so we’ll see if it works going forward, but he did what he was supposed to when his opportunities came about.”
After the game, Hart named Lawson and Douglas as the team’s players of the game.
“Peyton had a good day at the plate,” Hart said. “He had a few hits. Zach Ross was on base, by a walk or a hit by pitch. As a leadoff hitter, that’s what you want.”
McQuitty reflected after the game on the team getting its first win.
“It feels good,” McQuitty said. “It’s been tough.”
