The Campbell County Lady Cougars softball team defeated Concord Christian 11-0 at home on Monday night, highlighted by an inside-the-park home run from Destiny Rutherford in the bottom of the second inning.
“Honestly, it was a good performance by everybody,” CCHS head coach Rebecca Mongar-Collette said. “No matter whether they came in or started the game, everyone came in and did a job. The girls played up the entire time. They were aggressive at the plate.”
Keira Bierdemann got the start in the circle for Campbell County and quickly sat Concord Christian down in order in the top of the first inning.
Bierdemann walked to start the bottom of the first inning, but the next two batters struck out.
Campbell County responded with a two-out rally that was led by an RBI single to center from Maggie Adams that scored Bierdemann.
Lakin Smith singled, and then Adams scored on a throwing error and Smith advanced to second base.
Keiley Sims’ lineout ended the inning, but Campbell County led 2-0.
Concord Christian threatened in the top of the second inning by getting two runners on base.
Bierdemann, and the defense behind Bierdemann, found a way to get out of the inning by stranding two runners on base and preserving the 2-0 lead.
Jenna Leigh Pinkston popped out, and Jenna Yancey grounded out.
Campbell County put together another two-out scoring barrage that started with a Kyra Baird single.
“That’s something we have talked a lot about,” Mongar-Collette said. “One inning changes a game. You get something going, and the momentum of the game just switches. It kind of happened to us, but on the flip side, the other day at Catholic. This time was one where we got up, and it just changed how the game was going.”
Bierdemann then got on base after a fielding error on a ball hit to center field.
Rutherford came to the plate and hit the ball to the centerfield fence and was able to score everyone, including herself, on an inside-the-park home run.
“I was going for it all the way, no matter how far it went,” Rutherford said. “I was running with all my potential, no matter where it went. It was definitely something.”
Maggie Adams scored Amber Morris with a single that was followed by a throwing error.
A lineout from Smith ended the inning, but Campbell County led 6-0.
Bierdemann continued to shut down Concord Christian in the top of the third inning.
Campbell County scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning with big plays at the plate from Bierdemann and Rutherford to take an 8-0 lead.
Concord Christian was held scoreless the rest of the way.
Campbell County scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to help put the game away.
Big hits from Adams, Smith, Pinkston, Chadwell and Bierdemann, along with fielding errors from Concord Christian, helped Campbell County put the finishing touches on the win.
It was also alumni night as the Lady Cougars recognized former players and coaches before the game.
Mongar-Collette noted it’s something she hopes to make a tradition.
